MAT Data Analytics: How to Standardise Assessment Results

A MAT Leader's Guide to Standardising Assessment Data Across Multiple Schools

As a MAT leader setting the strategic priorities for the 2025/26 academic year, you have a clear vision. You likely already have the infrastructure such as Power BI, Arbor, Bromcom, set up to visualise your trust’s performance. But when you look at your multi-academy trust analytics, do you trust what you see?
The foundation of any analytics dashboard is data integrity. Yet, for many trusts, the reality is a patchwork of disparate spreadsheets and inconsistent marking. You are left with a fundamental question: how can you trust your assessment data if a Grade 6 in School A doesn’t mean the same thing as a Grade 6 in School B?

The Problem: The Data Standardisation Challenge at Scale

Standardising data across a single school is hard enough. Across a trust of 5, 10, or 30 schools, the challenge becomes exponentially more complex. This isn't an issue of effort; it's an issue of scale.
  • Each school, and often each department, has its own unique marking culture - its own "dialect." On a common trust-wide mock exam, a 6-mark question on an experimental method in Physics could be awarded a different score in every one of your schools, all based on slightly different interpretations of the mark scheme. This makes genuine, like-for-like comparisons of departmental performance impossible.
  • Getting all Year 11 Maths leads from every school in your trust into one room for a day of moderation is a logistical and financial nightmare. It means organising cover, travel, and venue hire, all for a process that can only ever scratch the surface. The result is often a "light touch" sampling of a few papers, which builds some professional community but fails to solve the root problem of inconsistency across thousands of scripts.
  • The manual process of marking, moderating, collating results, and submitting them to the central team is painfully slow. By the time you, as a leader, see a trust-wide analysis, the data can be weeks, or even a month, out of date. The window for meaningful, timely intervention has already closed.

The Traditional Fix: Cross-Trust Moderation and Data Dashboards

We respect the immense effort trusts invest in solving this problem. Cross-school moderation events are born from a genuine commitment to collaboration and alignment. They are valuable opportunities for professional development and are the current gold standard for trying to achieve a shared standard.
Similarly, many trusts invest heavily in powerful data visualisation tools like Power BI or Arbor to create central dashboards. These platforms are excellent for displaying data and tracking progress against KPIs.
However, both approaches share the same fundamental weakness: "garbage in, garbage out." The most collaborative moderation day and the most sophisticated dashboard are undermined if the raw assessment data being fed into them is inconsistent from the point of marking. Traditional methods simply cannot deliver true standardisation at scale.

Potential Solution: Centralised, AI-Powered Standardisation

This is where a centralised, AI-powered assessment platform transforms the entire equation. It acts as a single, objective "Chief Examiner" for your entire trust, ensuring every single script, from every school, is marked against the exact same standard.
  • Benefit 1: Achieve True Comparability
With AI marking, the postcode lottery is over. A 75% score on a mock exam now means the exact same thing whether the student is in School A or School Z. For the first time, your multi-academy trust analytics become a source of truth. You can now make genuine, like-for-like comparisons of school, department, and teacher performance, confident that you are comparing apples with apples.
  • Benefit 2: Get Instant, Centralised Data
The "data lag" is eliminated. The moment your schools' assessments are marked by the AI, the granular, question-level data is available in your central dashboard. You can review a live, trust-wide analysis of a common assessment the day after the students sat the paper, enabling you to plan and deploy support with unprecedented speed.
  • Benefit 3: Pinpoint and Share Excellence
With perfectly standardised, granular data, you can finally spot the outliers. If one department is overperforming, you know it’s due to teaching excellence, not lenient marking. You can then take these insights from leading teachers and deploy them across the trust. This turns data into actionable school improvement, freeing up your expert teachers from the administrative burden of marking to focus on what they do best: designing brilliant interventions and inspiring their students.

Conclusion: The Key to Trust-Wide Excellence

For a MAT, standardising assessment data isn't just an administrative task; it's the key to unlocking collaborative growth and system-wide excellence. The goal isn't to replace the invaluable expertise of a teacher, but to amplify it. Centralised AI marking ensures every mark is objective and every school's data is comparable, giving your staff the reliable tools and crucially, the time to make the greatest possible impact on their students.
