There is an old farming saying that every experienced teacher knows:
“You don't fatten a pig by weighing it.”
Yet, as we look ahead to the 2025/26 academic year, many schools have inadvertently become "measurement factories." We spend weeks generating data, checking data, and entering data into spreadsheets. But how much time is actually left to act on it?
Most UK Maths and Science departments are still running on a 1990s operating system: heavy manual marking, delayed data entry, and interventions that happen weeks after the mistake was made.
If you want a truly "High-Impact" department in 2026, you don't need
more assessments. You need a better process. Here is your 3-step strategic plan to stop just measuring performance and actually start improving it.
Step 1: Audit Your "Data Lag"
The most critical metric in your department isn't your Progress 8 score; it is your
data lag.
What is data lag?
Data lag is the time difference between a student sitting a mock exam and the teacher planning a lesson based on the specific gaps found in that paper.
- The Current Reality: In most schools, the lag is 7–14 days. By the time a teacher has manually finished marking test papers and entered the data, the student has forgotten the question. The "teachable moment" is cold.
- The 2026 Goal: Your strategic target for next year is to reduce Data Lag to 24 hours.
- The Fix: You cannot achieve a 24-hour turnaround with human power alone, not without burning out your staff. You must remove the manual marking bottleneck to close the gap between "test" and "teach."
Step 2: Automate the "Mechanical" Marks (M1 vs. B1)
Teachers are highly skilled
pedagogical experts, yet they spend 80% of their time acting as accountants. They are validating "Mechanical" marks:
Did they get the right answer? Did they follow the method?
This is high-volume, low-value work.
The Shift for 2026: Delegate compliance marking to GCSE mock exam AI marking tools.
Software like
ExamGPT is designed specifically to recognise Method Marks (M1) and Accuracy Marks (A1) in handwritten papers. Whether you are doing automated GCSE Science marking or Maths assessments, the principle is the same.
Our system doesn't just scan for a final number; it reads the student's handwritten working out (just like a human examiner) to award partial credit.
- Let the AI exam marking software do the accounting
- Let your teachers do the analysis
Step 3: Move from "Post-Mortem" to "Pre-Emptive"
Most traditional
Question Level Analysis (QLA) is a post-mortem. It tells you why a student "died" after the exam results are in. It is retrospective and often too late to change the GCSE outcome significantly.
The Goal: With an AI past paper marker, you move to pre-emptive intervention.
Because the data is instant, you get it
during the learning cycle, not after it. You can spot that 60% of Year 11 failed the "
Ionic Bonding" or "
Trigonometry" question on Tuesday, and reteach it on Wednesday weeks before the real exam.
This transforms assessment from a "judgment event" into a "diagnostic tool."

Conclusion: No More Marking Marathons
The technology now exists to automate the admin so you can elevate the teaching. This new year, make a strategic resolution to stop obsessing over the measurement and start focusing on the growth.
