Every week, parents across the UK contribute to an industry now valued in the billions.
According to the
Sutton Trust’s 2026 report, nearly 30% of secondary students now rely on private help. With specialised
GCSE Physics tutors now averaging £47.50 per hour, the financial stakes are high.
But listen closely to the first five minutes of that session. If the tutor sits down, opens a textbook, and asks,
"So, what did you do in school this week?" or
"What do you want to look at today?"... you have a problem.
If you're paying a premium for a "guessing game," you aren't just losing time, you're seeing a 50% decay in your ROI before the first textbook is even opened.
What is the 'Detection Gap' in private tutoring?
Here is the reality: Private tutors are fantastic at explaining complex concepts, but they are not mind readers.
When they walk into a session cold, they are forced to rely on the student’s (often highly unreliable) memory of what they found "hard" in a mock exam three weeks ago.
- Tutor: "What should we cover?"
- Student: "I don't know... I think I'm just bad at Physics."
The Result: The tutor spends the first 25 minutes blindly probing to find the weakness. They often end up re-teaching a broad topic (like 'energy') that the student actually understands, while the hidden logic gap that cost them 6 marks on their recent mock stays completely buried.

How can AI improve the ROI of GCSE tutoring?
We need to stop treating tutoring like a broad-spectrum antibiotic and start treating it like a surgical strike.
Imagine the shift in dynamics if, before the tutor even sits down, you hand them a 2-page
ExamGPT Student Report generated directly from the student's latest school mock paper.
Instead of a vague brief like "Help them with Physics," the ExamGPT report gives the tutor a precise target:
"Student understands conservation of energy but is losing marks on Assessment Objective 3: Evaluation of Momentum in inelastic collisions."
The Outcome: The guesswork is eliminated. The tutor spends 55 minutes fixing the exact neural pathway that is broken. By providing the diagnosis upfront, you have just doubled the ROI of that tutoring session.
Data for the Tutors
This isn't just about saving parents money; this is about empowering the educators.
The best tutors
want this data. Walking into a session with a granular breakdown of a student’s cognitive gaps makes a tutor look like an absolute genius. They don't have to waste time playing detective; they can get straight to the intervention.
Using
ExamGPT data transforms a tutor from a general "homework helper" into a precision "grade specialist." It allows them to guarantee progress faster than any tutor who is still working in the dark.
The Support System for Better Marks
Getting What You Need, Accurately
If we want to close the gap before the summer exams, we have to build a system where school data and home intervention actually talk to each other.
When you introduce
ExamGPT into the mix, you create an unbeatable
success flywheel:
- Mock Exam: The student sits the paper under timed conditions.
- AI Marking: ExamGPT marks the paper with examiner-level accuracy in 24 hours.
- Diagnostic Report: The AI flags the precise cognitive gaps and hidden misconceptions.
- Targeted Tutoring: The private tutor uses the report to deliver a surgical, highly efficient lesson.
- Mastery: The grade improves.
The Conclusion
Time and budget are running out before the summer exams. Don't pay a premium tutor to
find the problem. Use vertical AI (eg:
ExamGPT) to find the problem, and pay the tutor to
fix it.
